First I wanna say I'm located in Pasadena, CA. I'm really interested in adopting this specific German Shepard at San Gabriel Valley which is around 20ish miles away from me. I know THEIR adoption process, theres just no guarantee of me being able to adopt a dog due to their strict organization rules. They told me about some license that I need to pay for every year, get shots etc... I want to say something to the person at the Humane Society that would convince him into thinking I would be a good owner. I AM, it's just that my cousin adopted a CAT from some shelter and they were very strict about him for some reason. They sometimes would just act mean and suspicious by just judging his appearance I guess, and then he was only able to get it when his girlfriend who came with him who's mature, has a job, dresses nice etc... Then they were all nice to her for some reason. I was WITH them at the time... I just don't like how strict they are. I had a dog for around 8 years when I was 7 years old, however since I didn't know much about dogs and the process of getting his shots, me and my mom found him "sleeping". I don't remember much but my grandma called somebody to come by and said he died of natural causes. My dog "Bullet" RIP, was VERY old but I do remember playing with him and he loved basket balls. He was very active etc. But I do NOT recall my mom "who got the dog" giving him shots every year etc. We DID take him for walks though. Long story short, I really want another companion. I'm 20 years old, however I'm a recovering addict that has been on Suboxone for a while and I don't hold that much income. I still live with my parents etc. I'm not a bad person, I was just addicted to prescription medication. I never hurt anyone, or any animal. I just don't know if I should mention that to the person there because they might just decline me on the spot. The reason I want one is to help with the healing process, to have protection, to go take walks with (I have a lot of free time) and mainly just to keep my mind of depressive thoughts. Anyways, AFTER the adoption process, that is, IF I get the dog, how much would it cost yearly to get ALL his vaccinations, rabies etc? That's just something I don't know about. Also, can I take my dog ANYWHERE to get his shots? Any Vet or Humane Society, or do I have to go to that same specific one? I have a vet that's only a mile or so away from my house. I just want to know BEFORE I attempt to adopt one so that I don't come off as some man that has no knowledge about pets, even though having 2 (A dog when I was young here, and a dog when I moved to houston with my dad when I was around 16-18. I just don't know the rules here in California. I was also told that I needed some license to carry a dog? What the... Alright... this might be too long for people to read so I'll make a short list. 1.)Some way to convince the adoption agency that I'm fit to care for a dog without introducing myself in a bad way since I mentioned I'm a "still" recovering addict looking for a companion to help heal and have protection. I'm just saying, do you guys think they would turn me down for my story even though I KNOW I would take great care of the dog, give him a lot of attention and a lot of walks since I have so much free time on my hands. 2.) Knowledge about adopting a dog, where to take him for vaccinations (IS ANYVet/Humane society OK?) also how does this "Dog License" work. 3.) TOTAL cost yearly I just want to know so I have a clean introduction of myself to the humane society without having NO knowledge or looking like some dumbass. Thank you guys. The specific German Sheperd that I want they said would cost $135, but thats INCLUDING vaccinations,rabies shots,neuter. However saying that you payed almost a thousand bucks that was crazy... Man, I didn't know certain dogs can get THAT sick enough to where you have to pay so much. I admire what you did though. I just don't want to buy a "sick" dog with underlying diseases though... I just hope IF I get the dog, that I just have to pay at least $200 and up a year. $1000 a year is a little ridiculous, but then again, I admire that you love him so much and instead of putting him to sleep you took him to an overpriced vet. I'm not really trying to sound "Too serious" for this adoption. I just want a pet the same reason you guys probably have pets. I can take care of them. I know a vet close by. I had dogs. I just needed more education. I know that my problems are my own business and shouldn't be mentioned, but you said to just walk in and be "myself" and that being said, I agree. I just don't want to walk in without any knowledge, like I said before. I just have a feeling, walking in, and just saying "Oooh what a cute dog, can I adopt it?" then of course they would ask me why I even want a dog in the first place. Any person would just be themselves and tell the truth. EVERYONE probably said "I just want a dog as a companion, a friend, and for protection". Since everyone is saying that, I can't imagine how many people got rejected, or even accepted for just saying that. That's why I'm just worried of their personal discrimination. If I can&# No Dog Section Regular, I didn't say I just want to pay $200 a year. I said "AT LEAST" for "VACCINATIONS, SHOTS etc". I know how much dog food costs, toys etc. I'm not an idiot or a complete bum... Please read my things more clearly. I said for vaccinations only, not including food and toys. My friend had his dog for 6 months and he said he paid around the $200 area for vaccinations in california, so that's just what I assumed it would cost! If the humane society has "PRE VAC, NEUTERED" Sheperds for LESS THAN $200, that also makes me assume it costs the same price yearly..... think about it... I only asked to clarify. Also his dog is a little Dachshund, and I want a bigger companion. That's why I asked this question, in yahooanswers... just in-case anyone had a "Bigger dog" maybe it costs more.... Read More »
